CHAPTER 23

THE HYZAARS

Patrizia Moretti’s breaths came in short gasps. She didn’t mind the exercise. Trampoline was one of her favorite activities at gymnastics classes, and she was good at it. Her back flip had improved with hard work and practice. The motion had become so automatic that now she had to order her thigh muscles not to send her body into a spin that would land her on concrete pavement.

As she bounced on the worn-out mini-trampoline, she looked down at her designer sneakers. This wasn’t her gymnastics class. And the room wasn’t her gym. She looked up and froze inside. She hated the muscular man sitting in front of her. His biceps stuck out of a white t-shirt, and black curly hair protruded from the V-neck collar. Disgusting.

With each bounce, her budding breasts rubbed against her sweatshirt. And the man remained fixed on her chest. Her cheeks got hotter—much hotter than the light exercise would dictate. If only she could stop. Mom had mentioned she needed a bra. The two of them were supposed to go buy one together after the holidays. Would she ever get that bra? She missed Mom. Hadn’t heard from her since—. Why would Mom send her away with these people?

Something was wrong. When Mom told her to go with the short woman with the scarf, she had tears in her eyes. Mom looked so scared that Patrizia got scared too. And then they both started to cry. The woman with the scarf pulled her away from Mom. Tears came back to Patrizia’s eyes now. Her ponytail bounced on her back with every jump. What kind of a life had she gotten into?

For the past five days, she had been sitting in a room furnished only with a narrow bed, a chair, and a small desk. At odd hours every couple of days, the woman asked her to jump on the trampoline. And she always made Patrizia wear the special watch Mom had given her. Mom had promised she’d be away only for ten days and then they’d be back together. Patrizia had kept a close count of the passing days. Five more days left. One more shower. The rare showers in the small bathroom were kind of awkward. What would happen there today? A spasm ran through her body.

The woman with the scarf was nowhere in sight. The disgusting muscle man with that jagged scar on his neck had taken her place. His narrow dark eyes were still stuck on her body. Droplets ran down her face. Some fell to the trampoline. Patrizia’s hands came up from the sides and crossed in front of her chest. The man’s face twisted into a smirk.

“Faster,” he said. “And move your arms up and down, will you? We need much harder exercise than this.”
